The “Vans” range of kit build aircraft was founded in 1973 by Richard VanGrunsven. He had been previously modifying aircraft culminating in the RV-1 but for his company’s launch aircraft he decided to start from scratch on a design for an easy to manufacture plan that he called the RV-3. Initially this was a set of plans featuring a single place low mounted cantilevered wing with a very small wing area and strong, simple aluminium structure, augmented with composite components which made it very light and manoeuvrable. Tail dragger undercarriage configuration and a high power to weight ratio made it an effective aerobatic performer. With its success the range was expanded to include the two place RV-4; a two place tandem configuration and kit production began from this model. Initially this included merely a set of materials but quickly evolved into pre-cut and pilot drilled kits. The RV-4 rapidly became one of the most popular kit built aircraft available even to this day. The range has expanded through many models. RV-6 and RV6A (two place side by side), RV-7 (two place side by side with a larger wing span and larger rudder), RV-8 (two place tandem with a larger cabin and more baggage space than the RV-4), RV-9 (two place side by side with a much larger wing area and empennage giving a far more forgiving flight envelope), RV-10 (four place powered by far larger engine options and dramatically redesigned structure and shape) and the RV-12 (two place side by side ultralight). There have been over 7,500 Vans aircraft built to date with over 12,000 kits sold.
