CHECK LIST FOR THE SUPER VTOL [TAKE-OFF] The Super VTOL can take off either as a helo, or as a jet. VTOL MODE: *Click F8 to rotate the massive Fan Jets to straight up VTOL position (You may take-off with setting 4 instead of setting 5 in VTOL) *Leave stick nuetral *Begin smoothly moving throttle to full position *Undo brakes as you begin powering up the Fan Jets *Upon lift off, click F6 once *Retract landing gear *Begin slowly clicking F6 in increments of 5 seconds untill the Fan Jets are horizontal *If you require slow flight, leave the Jets at 2nd to 3rd setting. There are 5 in total. Note: You may hover-taxi the Super VTOL around the airfield. I use notch 4 of the 5 settings of F8 and throttle is usually at half to just under that to maintain roughly 10 to 20 feet alt. over tarmac. You may use setting 4 or 5 at your preference. 4 gives you slightly more speed in hover. Setting 5 usually requires nearly full throttle. REGULAR TAKE-OFFS *Fan Jets to full horizontal (straight ahead), multi click F5 to make sure *Throttle smoothly to full *Release brakes during spool up of Jets *At 80 knots, begin slowly pulling back on controls; do not pull back to far or you can risk a tail strike when the hull/wings catch lift *You can use one to two clicks of F7 for added lift off (STOL) take off; This aims the engines slightly upward and lessons the amount of runway needed. *Raise gear *Per descretion of pilot, return the jets back to Horizontal mode, F5. [STRAIGHT AND NORMAL FLIGHT] The Super VTOL flies normally at straight and true flight. But you will find she is quite a moody girl when it comes to turns. Your rudders are tuned to manuvre at slow speeds and thus you will need to treat them with care when you are up and at good speed. If you have time in the airliners and military cargo planes, its pretty much like that. Bring your jets down to a good cruise. You can overspeed quite easily in this lady. She has ample power, but primarily for freeing her from the bonds of Earth. Once you are flying true at horizontal mode, throttle back and set up for auto pilot cruise and begin assesing your flight status and conditions. [HIGH ALTITUDE HOVER] You can hover the Super VTOL at alt. *Throttle to zero *Apply speed brakes *Slow to 70 knots *Click F7 twice for 2 notches of VTOL at Fan Jets *Speedbrakes to off position *Upon slowing to 50 knots or less, click F8 for maximum VTOL *Throttle will almost need to be at full throttle for maximum VTOL *Monitor alt. per panel instrumentation and adjust alt. with throttle [LANDING] VTOL LANDING: The Super VTOL cannot go from horizontal true flight to VTOL mode without slowing. Very dangerous to just begin raising these mighty Fan Jets while cruising along at 250 to 400 knots. You would begin rocketing upwards at a tremendous rate and probably over stress your ship. Thus you will need to slow to begin transition. *Throttle down to commence slow down of vessel *Use spoilers/airbrakes with ' / ' key to slow down more if needed *Slow to 100 knots or less when on approach for your target landing zone *Click F7 once or twice and keep nose down as it tries to come up, mainly with second click. *Drop your gear *At 1/4 mile mark, click F7 again and begin slowing for your touch down *Upon 50 yards of target touchdown point, click F7 twice for maximum up angle of Fan Jets (or F8 for max. angle VTOL). *Pull back on controls to bring the nose up as she begins to pitch forward *Use throttle if you begin to fast of a descent. *Touch down with Main Gear first ‘Always’. You can hold the nose as high as 10 degrees without worrying about a tail strike. Note: Release spoilers ' / ' before touchdown to promote a smooth landing. Leaving them on will cause the ship to drop at the last min. REGULAR LANDING: You may land the Super VTOL like a normal Jet airliner. She will act and behave a bit similar. *Slow to 140 knots on final *Drop gear *Click F7 once or twice if needed for decelleration as well as added lift at slower speeds *Touch down at 70 knots roughly. [ASSUALT LANDINGS] The Super VTOL is also designed to be an assault lander, the most awesome lander to have been created. (Countries based on peace that strive to keep the world a better place have to have a good defensive army). Thus the Super VTOL was designed to come out of high speed and almost virtually stop in mid-air and gently touch down. The Following is a quick checklist/technique for such a landing. *Approach at 430 knots plus, descent to target at 2000 FPM plus *Throttle to zero/idle *Engage speed brakes at 2 miles out *Drop gear at Ѕ mile out *Click F7 twice, holding nose down in continued descent *At ј mile and or at 70 knots, click F7 once again for notch 3 of VTOL *Keep nose down, aim for alt. of 50 to 75 feet *Release speed brakes *As ship begins to ‘fall’ in a rapid descent, click F7 3 plus times to ensure you have full VTOL angle *Go to half plus throttle and nose up 10 degrees ‘Immediately’ after engaging full VTOL *Touch down is judged by amount of throttle. Note: When landing with nose up at or less then 10 degrees, you may look out the side window to judge height and throttle requirements for a soft landing since your panel view will be looking up. Note: My apologies, but the Super VTOL is a tiger to get her to handle in Yaw manuvres when at hover taxi. I am not the best when it comes to creating an airfile. Such control would be made incredibly easy with the NOTAR like thruster vent rings on the engines, but programming that into a Microsoft Flight sim plane where a VTOL file is non existent is a bit difficult. I suggest using a bit of aileron in ‘stabs’ and applying some rudder will get her to turn and ‘stay on track’. She drifts with the cross winds and so going a distance in a straight line is a bit difficult. Using only rudder, as you will see, only causes her to turn sideways without changing course. Aileron input with rudders seems to be the only remedy and reign for such maneuvering. Note; This is a prototype concept vessel. Your are learning how to fly something totally new. Just like ole Igore Sikorsky when he was the first to fly and learn all about helicopter control and manuvering (well into his golden years I should add). So keep in touch with your thoughts and input. The config files can be tuned and improved. I am the first to acknowledge that my air.files are not the best. Its just that no one makes them for the types of aircraft I design, so I am stuck creating them from scratch. (I like designing them a little more then engineering the flight dynamics, but I must admit, I have become quite the test pilot and I am learning about tuning the config files more and more).
