description="In 1938 the variant of plane DB-3 with absolutely new, easily gathering glider was developed. As a result of its appearance has absolutely changed: the nasal part has been made narrower, has received well streamline form and the big area,and nasal plane DB-3 machine gun has been replaced by machine-gun installation. The state acceptance tests have successfully come to the end in June, 1939, and by the end of the same year the plane has been prepared for a batch production. The new variant Ilyushin DB-3F later was named as Il-4. Plane Il-4 Large-lot production proceeded till 1944. During this time 5256 cars have been constructed. Initial engine M-87 in 1942 has been replaced by more powerful motor M-88B with a two-level supercharger. The majority of the planes constructed in 1942, because of shortage of easy alloys had a wing with wooden longerons; in later serial cars metal again has been used. Except realisation of bombardments in deep back of the opponent, planes Il-4 which are a part of bombing cases of aircraft of distant action, were often applied in attacks to tactical targets in near back of the enemy, bearing the maximum bombing loading. Plane Il-4 was widely used by regiments of torpedo bombers on Baltiysk and Black the seas, and also on Northern fleet. Used in a role of a torpedo bomber plane Il-4 bore 940 kg of torpedoes 45-36-АН (for attack from small height) or torpedoes 45-36-AB (for attack from the big height).Under a back part of a fuselage there were fastenings for installation of external additional fuel tanks.
